9 spd shimano with 7 speed(5 posts)

9 spd shimano with 7 speedDan Ida

Has anyone tried using shimano 9 speed cranks ( which I got for a super price) with a 7 speed rear hub (shimano 105 or ultegra with sti levers up front)!!!! I want to keep using my older wheels until they are trash and don't want to spend the money to upgrade wheels now. I have been told that if I use the 9 speed chain -- this will work. Anyone know for sure/??

THANKS

No problem, you can even use your exixting chain if it's in good shape. Narrow 9 speed chain won't work with your 7 speed casette.

I agree. I use 9speed TA chainrings with a 7 speed chain and block, never had any problems. Can you still get 7 speed chainrings? Well I guess you can, but I bet there isn't much there.

I have two other 7 speed bikes for members of my family......SOOOOO....I have been collecting 7 speed stuff for a while. I have several sets of sti shifters to use (rsx, rx100 and 105) Everything else onthe bike will be 7 spped stuff except the chain and crankset. FOR NOW !!!!!
