Long reach calipers are usually about 48-57mm as measured from the top of the caliper slot to the bottom from the midline of the center bolt.Measure with a vernier(preferable) or tape measure from the mounting hole on the frame and the fork straight down to the middle of the rim. Do this with the wheel you intend to use. Many older frames used 27" wheels but you may be fitting, as I did, a 700c wheel which will be smaller in diameter and hence increase the reach needed.Brake calipers exist that exceed 57mm of reach but the quality is not high and availability is poor. One last thing, be aware that there are two different ways to attach calipers to a frame, recessed allen bolt or external nut attachment. To complicate matters many frames, mine for instance have allen in front with external nut in back.A great help in these matters was provided by the Third Hand which is unfortunately closing on Thursday the 29th.There are special washers needed for external nut fitting that you may have to get at a bike shop. Maybe. Ebay is an excellent source for these older calipers. I scored a beautiful set of 1973 Gran-Compes for $9.60 there.Good luck.

If you can't find older brakes (I have a set of early 80's 600EX's if you want) or you want to put newer dual pivot brakes on an old frame (as I did) then you can get "extension" bolts. Harris Cyclery has them but they tend to be more expensive than the brakes themselves (USD40 plus). Generally Harris seems to have a lot to offer building up old framnes although not cheap. or (I think).

A year ago I bought some NOS long reach dia-comp center pulls from who seemed at the time to have a collection of NOS stuff.
