I just had my rear wheel rebuilt after one of the spokes started to pull thru the rim. LBS fitted a Mavic Open Pro to my 6 speed 105 36spoke hub with 16g spokes. Now I have an unbearable creaking/grinding noise which is more pronounced when in smaller cogs. LSB says its the cogs/freewheel but I have my doubts. I put this wheel on my other road bike and no noise. Any thoughts?

Offhand I'd say it sounds like they didn't get the spoke tension right, assuming all else is normal. However, you said you put it on you other bike and *didn't* get the noises so it seems that the spoke tension is not the problem. How about if you put a known good wheel on the first bike - this will tell you if the creaking is caused by the bike or the wheel.

What other changes have you made? tracking down a drive train related noise can be a bit maddening. You have to systematically check everything.

I swapped the wheels between both bikes and no noise on either. That makes me think its a combination of a worn chain and cog. I noticed the sound was most prominent in the 15 cog which is what I spend the most time in. I ordered a new free wheel and chain.
