I am in the process of purchasing a 2000 Raleigh R500 road bike, with Shimino Tiagra and 9 speed. I s the Shimino Tiagra components any good. And how long after I finish buying the Raleigh R500 should it last? And when shall I upgrade? considering this is my fist road bike, and I new to recreational road cycling. need advice!!!

If you're not planning on doing a lot of racing, the Tiagra gruppo isn't a bad one, its going to be a smidge heavier and its not going to have the high performance of ultegra or D/A. As for durability, replace your chain every 1000 miles or so, and have it checked out every so often. My last bike (until i trashed the frame) was 8 or 10 years old, and a with some matainance, would have lasted me longer.
