Crank length(6 posts)

Crank length50lbs Butt

I currently have rsx 170 crank on my bike and was wondering if a 172.5 would make effort easier or harder. I'm having a mental block
and can't think it thru. I'm upgrading components, and looking for something that will help me up the b*tch of a climb on our group rides. Any gear ratio advice. Thanks to all responses.

From what I've heard, the research on crank length is not too conclusive. Theoretically, the 172.5's would give you more leverage and consequently help on the hills. However, we're only talking about 1.5% difference so you would have to be pretty sensitive to notice much difference.

It sounds logical to me that real tall people would benefit from long cranks and I'm confident that real short people benefit from short ones. The people in between, I'm not so sure about.

The basics are that the longer the crank arm the more leverage there is for mashing while the shorter the crank arm the less leverage and it's easier to spin. The difference between 165 and 175 might be noticable but less so when there is less difference. TTFN

With regard to longer cranks, the important question is, can you spin them fast enough? Longer cranks are harder to spin then shorter cranks. If your legs are on the medium to short side, then longer cranks likely won't help you out.

It sounds like your problem is a spinning issue - that you can't maintain a comfortable, controlled cadence up the hills. Given that your power up the hill results from both your torque (crankarm length is applicable here) and your cadence, an easier and cheaper solution to your problem would be to reduce your pedaling force through replacing your present cassette cluster with one that has lower gears.
