O.K.; it seems like more than a couple of people have been having trouble with their Ultegra STI levers. In an effort to figure out if this is coincidence or not, let's take a poll.

Question #1: What are the symptoms of your lever malfunction?

Question #2: What is the age of your lever?

Question #3: Did it ever, to your knowledge, work properly?

Question #4: Did it come on the bike, or did you install it (or have it installed) later? In other words, could OEM cables be the problem?

Anything else you can think of?

Here are the problems I have with my Ultegra STI shifters (8-speed) when the temp drops below 55-60 degrees.

1. Right shifter(s) move fine, but do not change gears.

2. I've had the levers for 9 years.

3. Works fine in temps above 60.

4. The levers came on the bike and were installed by a LBS.

The left shifter(s) work fine until the temp drops below 40-45. I am not complaining about the shifters, though. I mean...hell...they are 9 years old! The beauty is that this gives me an ideal reason to upgrade to 9 speed Dura Ace STI's.

I just posted another message on my Ultegra shifting problem, but here are the answers to your questions:

#1 Doesn't downshift from 7 to 6, although Flight Deck shows shift occurring. Next time you downshift, it goes all the way from 7 to 5.

#2 My Bianchi is a 1999 Alloro, so that would make the shifters two years old at most.

#3 I'm pretty sure this problem has developed fairly recently, at least I just started noticing it within the past month or so.

#4 Ultegra 9-speed STI was the original equipment on my bike. I don't think the cables have ever been replaced.

I had an accident after a few months of installing it. But prior to that the small screw on the right STI fell out and things weren't the same. I replace it but still not satisfied.

Question #2: Since 98. But I doubt they were 98 model. Probably a year before that?

Question #3: When I installed it it worked fine.

Question #4: Couldn't be the cables. I installed it at the shop of my friend. He got the parts for me. This is the second STI I've installed. The first one was the 6501.

I think they're made pretty well but they're not bombproof. I wish they were made life yesteryears component. Wished!

Those are questions that cut right through the fog and get right to the core of a lot of the problems that people have with their bikes. I especially like #3 and #4. Sometimes a lot of fixing bikes is simply undoing the work of others.

1. Just checked this morning after reading post. I am skipping a small cog while on the small chain ring. It can happen going up or down. I think it has to do with the pressure on the levers. Does not happen with every shift.
2. 2001
3. Not sure if it ever worked properly. I have noticed a skip here and there for awhile. It is such a big improvement over my old bike I did not pay much attention to it.
4. Installed new by LBS.
