I've seen new old stock 8 sped STI's selling for as much as 9speed. If you are going to replace, consider the 9speed. They work fine with 7400 series components.

The 7700 STI levers will not properly index on an 8 spd cassette.

Nor will the 7400 rear derailleur index on a 9 spd cassette when used with 7700 levers.

The 7700 rear derailleur is backwards compatible, in that it will index on an 8 spd cassette using 7400 STI, provided you use the 8 spd pivot position on the derailleur.

The only related 7400 components that 7700 levers are compatible with are the brake calipers and the front derailleur. The latter is thinner on the 7700 series.

The choices are either to find NOS or used 7400 STI levers, or buy 7700 STI levers, 7700 rear cassette and a 9 spd compatible chain.

Nine speed DA shifters (as well as any other shimano 9 speed shifters) will work with an 8 speed Dura Ace rear derailer to shift an 8 speed cogset.Been there, done that...twice.Works perfectly.

Wessley is right. My current setup is 7700 STI's with 7400 Rear. Works flawlessly

Makes me wonder why I bought a set of 8 spd 7400 STI levers last year. Learn something every day.

Thanks
